`Bonnie And Clyde Style' Chase Couple Face More Charges

Wellington, Feb 18 NZPA - A man and woman who allegedly shot at police during a Bonnie and Clyde-style chase in north Otago had their name suppression lifted when they reappeared in Oamaru District Court this afternoon.

Christopher Shaw, 25, and Stacey Estelle Snelleksz, 22, both of Palmerston North, faced more charges when they separately appeared before Judge Stephen O'Driscoll.

They arose from an alleged mini crime wave which started in Picton and ended when their Land Rover crashed near Palmerston, north of Dunedin, earlier this month.

Police said several shots were fired during the police chase and road spikes had not stopped the Land Rover which was found to be full of stolen goods.

The pair, with two toddlers aged 18 months and 12 months in their arms took off across farmland but gave themselves up after being surrounded police.

Shaw and Snelleksz originally faced joint charges of using a firearm against police, failing to stop for police and stealing a Land Rover from Picton.

New jointly laid charges laid today included four charges of wilfully ill-treating a child, dangerous driving and receiving.

Shaw, also known as Christopher Daniel Hubbard, was also charged with burglary in Palmerston North, cultivating cannabis, receiving, theft from a car and unlawfully interfering with a vehicle.

Snelleksz was charged with charged with permitting premises to be used for cultivating cannabis, receiving theft from a car and possessing an offensive weapon.

No pleas were entered and they were remanded in custody until March 4.
