The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has improved the popular tourist route between Waitomo Caves and Rotorua by adding a second lane onto the State Highway 30 Orongomapoho Bridge.

The Orongomapoho Bridge, east of Benneydale near Crusader Meats, is the third former single-lane bridge that NZTA has widened to two-lanes on this section of SH30 in the past five and a half years. The replacing of a fourth bridge is currently being investigated.

NZTA Acting Regional Director Kaye Clark says, "We recognise that this is a popular tourist route that is used by many motorists who are unfamiliar with our roads. Six years ago there were five single lane bridges between Te Kuiti and Barryville and we have reduced that number to two."

Mrs Clark says the widening of the Orongomapoho Bridge to two lanes last month has improved the overall predictability and safety of the highway.

NZTA is now investigating the feasibility of upgrading the bridge at the intersection of Mokau Road and SH30.
