Later in the afternoon a walker received suspected leg injuries whilst walking the Eastern track by Lake Okataina (east of Rotorua). The dense bush made locating the injured person very difficult, but once spotted by the rescue helicopter a paramedic was winched down to her using the "first Sovereign Rescue Winch".
Once assessed the 20 year old Kawerau woman was winched aboard the helicopter and flown to Rotorua Hospital for treatment.
