Call For NZ Tradespeople To Help Rebuild Samoa

Wellington, Oct 1 NZPA - Habitat for Humanity is calling for New Zealand builders and tradespeople to volunteer to help in Samoa after this week's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

At least 150 people have died in the 8.0 magnitude earthquake and following tsunami which struck Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga.

Habitat has sent a disaster relief expert to Samoa to liaise with other aid agencies and assess the need for emergency and long term shelter.

Once the assessment reports were done "we swing into action and work to restore homes, villages and communities", Habitat New Zealand chief executive Pete North said.

"We want to hear from builders and people in the construction trades who may be free to travel within the next few weeks and give up their time to help rehouse those in need in Samoa."

Habitat has launched an appeal to fund emergency shelters and the rebuilding of homes.

Donations can be made at www.habitat.org.nz or 0800 44 22 48.

The international housing charity aided in rebuilding ten of thousands of homes in South Asia after the boxing day tsunami in 2004.

Hey i read this on the habitat for humanity, hope you all get a chance to go over and help out, thanks for having big hearts.
Habitat is also seeking expressions of interest from volunteer builders and trade persons who are able to go to Samoa and help with the cleanup and rebuilding. These can be sent to information@habitat.org.nz. Dates cannot be finalised until assessment of need and conditions is completed in Samoa, but Habitat will keep all interested parties informed of progress so that Kiwi teams can go to Samoa when the timing is right.
