Christchurch, July 2 NZPA - A 28-year-old man has admitted to sexually abusing a young girl over a five-year period and is now in custody awaiting sentence.

The offending occurred in the Christchurch area from 2003 to 2008. At the end of that time, the girl was aged 10.

The man had been due for trial in Christchurch District Court in two months' time, but he suddenly switched his pleas to guilty at a pre-trial call-over today.

Judge Michael Crosbie remanded him in custody for a crown sentencing on September 18, and called for a pre-sentence report, and a victim impact report.

The man's name cannot be published.

He admitted eight charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and two of sexual conduct with a child under 12.
