Children Tell The UN What It's Really Like To Be A Young Person In New Zealand Today

New Zealand's latest child participation report to the United Nations is being launched at parliament tomorrow.

Named after the lyrics of New Zealand's national anthem, the report called Hear Our Voices We Entreat is the result of a series of focus groups held with 199 young people throughout New Zealand from May 2009 - April 2010.

"Hear Our Voices We Entreat provides recommendations from young people about a number of changes that they believe need to happen in New Zealand. These include addressing the effects of domestic violence on children, respecting the rights of and listening to the opinion of Maori, to including young people in discussions about climate change, giving young people a voice in national and local government, and teaching about diversity in schools," says Liz Gibbs, CEO of Save the Children New Zealand.

Every five years, Governments who have signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child must report on the progress they have made for children, Hear Our Voices gave children and young people the opportunity to add their own perspectives to the United Nations.

"Save the Children engaged with young people from around New Zealand and captured their perceptions about their rights and well being, recording these in five minute digital stories. This report accompanied reporting from NGOs in New Zealand," says Ms Gibbs.

"We are not only calling on policy makers to take note and listen to what New Zealand's children and young people have said to the United Nations, but to respond to the UN's call for additional and updated information about how we are maintaining the Convention here.

"Save the Children will be using this report as the basis to continue working with young people in New Zealand and look at how we can support them in helping to achieve positive change in some of the areas they have highlighted. And we look forward to partnering with government, business and other NGOs to do this." says Ms Gibbs.

Save the Children New Zealand together with UNICEF, Action for Children and Youth Aotearoa, the Office of the Children's Commissioner, the Human Rights Commission and YouthLaw make up an Advisory Group that advises the New Zealand government on matters related to the Convention.
