Clutha District Council is urging all residents to conserve their water usage as the prolonged dry spell places substantial strain on some supplies, particularly in the West Otago area.

Water Services Manager Hank Stocker said the Clutha District was so far experiencing one of its driest summers in recent memory, with less than 10mm of rain since the start of December.

'Stage One - Summer Mode' restrictions came into force in early December, which means watering is permitted between the hours of 8pm and 8am only. Watering systems and sprinklers may be used during these times, but should not be left unattended and the occupier must ensure that water is not being used wastefully.

Mr Stocker said that while the restrictions helped to conserve water usage in urban areas, they had little impact for rural water schemes where the bulk of water is supplied through restrictors and is used for farm stock.

"All residents, including those on rural water schemes, are therefore requested to conserve water, observe the current restrictions and avoid any wastage."

Council also wished to remind consumers on restricted water schemes that it is illegal to tamper with their connections, he said.

"Tampering to increase the flow equates to stealing water from neighbours and Council will pursue actions in any such cases."

Any leaks and overflows in Council supplies should also be reported promptly by calling 0800 801 350, or repaired if in private plumbing.

All of these measures would help to reduce the possibility of more severe water restrictions if dry conditions prevail, Mr Stocker said.
