Council To Host Enviroschools Celebrations On North Shore

Enviroschools on the North Shore will celebrate their fabulous environmental efforts and achievements next week at two North Shore City Council hosted celebrations in the lead up to Earth Hour. Enviroschools, which has been running for ten years throughout New Zealand, is an environmental education partnership programme involving central, regional and local government. There are currently 32 Enviroschools in North Shore City.

North Shore City Council Enviroschools Facilitator, Monique Zwaan says Enviroschools has been extremely positive not just for our schools and their students, but for our North Shore communities and surrounding environments.

"The celebrations next week are a way for the children involved to showcase their achievements to students from other schools, and to celebrate their wonderful efforts in being proactive in managing and protecting their environments.

"Enviroschools on the Shore has been incredibly successful, with students being involved in everything from worm farming and litter-less lunches, to building sustainable structures within their communities and developing visions for the environmental futures of their schools," she says.

There are two separate celebrations taking place next Friday and Saturday - one for primary and intermediate Enviroschools and one for secondary schools.

Friday's celebration for primary and intermediate Enviroschools is themed as "Travelling Light" and will encourage children to discuss how they can travel sustainably, both with how they get places, and as an attitude of having a smaller carbon footprint.

Saturday's celebration for secondary school students is themed as "Faster alone, Further Together" and includes environmental leadership training and looking at global issues affecting the environment such as climate change. Many of these students will also be involved in a community event that evening at Mt Victoria in Devonport, in support of Earth Hour.
