A Council Retreat conducted in the Council Chambers on Saturday - and involving elected members, senior managers and policy staff - has decided that the council's vision and mission statement needs to formally change.

At last Tuesday's Community Development Committee, councillors were asked to list their policy and planning priorities for council action over the next 10 years. The results were fed into the Council Retreat and further debated and discussed.

In terms of future strategies, the priorities were:

1. Family-friendly 2. Economic growth 3. Visitor/tourism

In terms of future policies, councillors' priorities were:

1. Arts 2. Moutoa Quay usage 3. Playgrounds

In terms of planning priorities, the councillor vote was:

1. Southern entranceway 2. Kowhai Park 3. Virginia Lake

Mayor Michael Laws said that council recognised "that a provincial district such as ours will tend to have different priorities to that of a major city or metropolitan area".

"The adoption of a family-friendly credo is a significant step for the council. It means that we are attempting to improve and assist the quality of life for people living here, and particularly families. "If we cannot retain and attract families to Wanganui, then our city will wither and die. That is the lesson that council has learned from the repeated drops in population over the past three censuses."
