9 September 2008 - DHBs are a little prematurely celebrating a successful resolution to the ongoing resident (junior) doctor dispute without taking into consideration that the majority of junior doctors have yet to sight or approve the proposal, according to the New Zealand Resident Doctors Association (NZRDA).

NZRDA general secretary Dr Deborah Powell says DHBs announcement which states that they have agreed to terms of settlement but that they do not want to announce details of the details of the proposal until it has been ratified is slightly overstated. "With respect, while we believe that this is the first deal put to resident doctors that is worthy of our member's review, to insinuate that it is a foregone conclusion is not completely correct."

"Also, to say after 15 months of negotiating that this proposal now clears the way for DHBs to start talking about the training and development needs of our medical workforce is frustrating to say the least.

"We have been petitioning them to address the workforce issues for the past 15 months and we do not believe that we have to have a deal ratified before these issues are addressed."
