Diesel Contamination - Vehicle Owner Tips

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) says that there are a number of practical steps that vehicle owners can take to minimise diesel contamination problems. Marketing and Communications General Manager Ian Stronach says "These days it's vital that diesel fuel is free of contaminants such as water, or microbiological 'bugs'. As owners have discovered, these can have devastating effects, especially on modern diesel engine components causing costly damage to fuel injectors and pumps."

MTA, which represents over 80 per cent of New Zealand's service station owners and operators, says good housekeeping and maintenance has to be shared between the site owner, the fuel supplier, the equipment maintenance and service provider and of course the vehicle owner.

Stronach says "The industry is generally well aware of their obligations and the handling and storage practices they need to be following so as to avoid any contamination, however, the public may not be aware of the steps they can take.

Steps vehicle owners can and should take include:

If your diesel vehicle is not used frequently, keep the tank topped up to reduce condensation occurring. Avoid filling from low volume containers such as farm tanks, and be extra vigilant of contamination when doing so. Get your vehicle serviced regularly. Pay particular attention to fuel filters and change them regularly. Get your vehicle checked immediately if the engine starts to cut out, particularly if you have only just filled your tank. Consider sticking to one service station so you are more able to prove the source of your fuel if it is found to be contaminated. Keep fuel receipts as proof of purchase if any problems occur. Familiarise yourself with the warning signs for contaminated fuel in your vehicle
