A Wellington couple are celebrating Christmas all over again after discovering on Saturday they had won a $402,678 in the Lotto draw on Boxing Day, says NZ Lotteries' Chief Executive, Todd McLeay.

The winning ticket had been sitting in a pile of papers for several weeks before one of the winners took it with her to check at a Lotto store while buying a ticket for last weekend's Endless Summer promotion.

"I put it through the ticket scanner in the store but couldn't understand why it didn't tell me how much I had won," said the winner. "So then I gave it to the operator to check and she told me I was a big winner though I still didn't really comprehend how big the prize was.

"My husband was trying to get hold of me to find out what was taking so long, but my son had changed my ringtone and I didn't realise - I wondered why I kept hearing the same song over and over," laughed the winner.

The winners said they've always known they'd win Lotto some day and have been playing since it began in 1987 - and they'd played Golden Kiwi before then.

"It's come at a very good time for us, my husband was made redundant last year and it's been a struggle," said the winner.

"This just goes to show how important it is for players to check their tickets - who knows who else may have a big prize just waiting for them?" said Mr McLeay.

The winning ticket was sold at Wellington City New World.
