Wellington, May 9 NZPA - Disgraced ex-police chief Clint Rickards has started work as a lawyer at the same Auckland court where the woman he was cleared of sexually violating assists victims of crime.
Mr Rickards had his first shift as a duty solicitor at Auckland District Court on Thursday, The Herald on Sunday reported today.
Rotorua woman Louise Nicholas alleged in 2004 that she had been the victim of sexual violence at the hands of Mr Rickards and two other police officers Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum when they were based in Rotorua in the 1980s.
Mr Rickards was an assistant police commissioner when her allegation became public.
All three were found not guilty of sexual violence charges against her at a 2006 High Court trial, and of sex charges against another unnamed Rotorua woman a year later.
Mr Rickards was admitted to the bar in November 2008.
Ms Nicholas, who works as a survivor advocate at Auckland District Court, said she was appalled that Mr Rickards could be defending criminals so soon after he was in the dock.
A lawyer, who did not want to be named, said there were many people at the courthouse "who don't want the guy in the building".
"As lawyers we have to respect he was acquitted and we shouldn't be doing this job if we don't respect that fact," she said.
"[But] he has created enormous damage to the police brand."
Duty solicitor supervisor Leigh Langridge, who supported Mr Rickards' application to work at the district court, said he should be given the opportunity to move on.
His experience as a policeman and defendant meant he had great knowledge of the law, she said.

Leigh Langridge Duty
Leigh Langridge Duty solicitor of Auckland court says that clint Rickards has great knowledge of the law so should be able to practice as a lawyer, well,so has Dean Whitcliffe and members of the mongrel mob, should we let them become lawyers too.Rickards was acquitted in the two trials for rape even though his two co-accursed were already serving time for another gang rape, but what about the 15 internal police charges for sexual misconduct that he never went up on because he conveniently resigned from the police before they could be heard.Lets not beat around the bush,he resigned because he knew he would be found guilty on the 15 internal charges, here, here's a $1000,000,go away.By Leigh Langridges reasoning,we should let any one who has experience of courts to become a lawyer.Once again, another example of one law from police men,all blacks, and millionaires, and the other law for everyone else.I recall "Terry Clark's" girlfriend who was never convicted of any offence, yet they wouldnt let her become a lawyer, where is the difference ??? One law for them, the other for everyone else.Clint Rickards will be remembered as the biggist travisty in the history of the NZ police and juris prudence in this country and now we have a high court judge who has lied through his teeth and is refusing to go.We can trust the justice system in NZ,YEAH RIGHT

I would like to comment about the deceiptful lieing that goes down with the victim support service in auckland central district criminal court There system is ridiculously slow and as each one works like a spider web ant farm in liase with each other they completly miss the compassion in the victim as a spouse to whom has been charged for imbreaching a domestic order related by seperating the person to his own phisical address which is disaster when that persons income is the only source of that victims and restraints are made upon the defendant although this person may have habitually imbreached its domestic order 50 x or more the judges have nver given the defendant sentencing but victim support bully and isolate the victim apart from there source of living and income instead of enforcing the sentencing no just pick on the victim stigmatiseation
