Wellington, Feb 23 NZPA - A driver faces charges after failing to stop for police and then crashing into a Hamilton West house this morning.

The driver was signalled to stop by a highway patrol officer on Greenwood St in Frankton for what was supposed to be a routine stop just before midday, police said.

He increased speed and was chased, but the pursuit was abandoned after less than 2km due to excessive speed and danger to the public.

A few minutes later the Subaru stationwagon crashed into the front of a house on Lethborg St, in Frankton.

The driver fled but was caught by police with the help of the public.

The elderly resident at home at the time of the crash was unhurt, though shaken by the incident.

Acting Hamilton City area commander Inspector Karen Henrikson said police would pursue those who failed to stop, with due regard for public safety.

"We are asking people to consider the safety of everyone and simply pull over when being requested to stop by police," she said.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) had been advised and would investigate to ensure proper procedure and policy were followed.

A 19-year-old man will appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow on a number of charges.
