Drivers Change Their Behaviour

Police have released figures for offence notices issued since the introduction of the Land Transport (Road User) Amendment Rule 2009 which included a ban on the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving.

The latest Police figures show that the majority of drivers have changed their behaviour with total of only 902 offence notices issued nationwide.

"Overall Police is satisfied that the majority of drivers are changing their cell phone use behaviour to comply with the law and reduce their risk on the road. We have been pleased to see the way the driving public has really taken up this message," said National Manager - Road Policing Superintendent Paula Rose today.

In the first few weeks following the introduction of the new legislation Police focussed on reminding drivers about the new restrictions, and providing the opportunity for drivers to educate themselves about the risk involved.

Although the Rule allows the use of hands-free mobile phones, Police recommended that drivers minimise the potential for distraction by switching phones off while driving, or pulling over to make or receive calls.

The Rule does not allow drivers to create, send, or read text messages under any circumstances.

Police has now moved out of the "softly, softy" phase to an emphasis on enforcement action but despite this, there is no significant increase in the number of drivers detected using a cell phone while driving.

"Road safety is everyone's responsibility and it has been pleasing to see the number of passengers watching out for drivers and answering phones on their behalf," said Superintendent Rose.

" But to those drivers still using hand-held cell phones, Police urge you to stop - you are posing a road safety risk to yourself and others," she said.
