Drivers are being urged to be aware and careful on southern roads as surface flooding and high river levels are causing problems.

Southland District Council asset manager roading Russell Hawkes said there is surface flooding on roads around the district, particularly on roads close to rivers and streams, many of which are on flood alert.

"With the prolonged dry period and now the heavy rain we have had over the past few days and the fact that there is a severe weather warning out for the next couple of days, southern roads are under threat from flooding," Mr Hawkes said.

Three roads - Counsell Road, Lora River Road and Hall Road - in the Southland District are closed now and others, including Grove Bush Road, have water over them.

Mr Hawkes is also concerned about the areas in the lower reaches of the rivers at high tide time.

"Our maintenance contractors are out monitoring the situation and are endeavouring to put warning signs on the worst-hit roads, but please be careful and drive to the conditions if you are travelling on roads around the district."

Monitoring will continue throughout the night.
