Wellington, Jan 8 NZPA - A 19-year-old Wanganui woman driver has been jailed for three months, after a night of drunken mayhem.
Jessica Winiata was this week sentenced in Wanganui District Court on four charges relating to her behaviour on the night of December 23.
About 11.50pm, her car was seen speeding and weaving along Mosston Rd, accelerating and doing "donuts" before it ran off the road and into a fence, the Wanganui Chronicle reported.
When police demanded her keys, she became distraught and started flinging herself around.
She struggled so hard on the way to the patrol car an officer had to handcuff her.
She then lashed out with her feet, kicking the officer's legs, the court was told.
This continued in the patrol car, where she was pepper-sprayed in a bid to calm her.
"To put it mildly, your behaviour has been completely out of control -- your behaviour has been appalling," said Judge Michael Radford.
He sentenced her three months' jail on a charge of assault with intent to injure, resisting police, driving while disqualified, and having an excess breath alcohol reading of 715mcg.
Judge Radford also ordered her to attend alcohol and drug counselling, vocational training and disqualified her from driving for six months.
