What do Flight of the Conchords' star Jermaine Clement, singer Elvis Costello and actress Scarlett Johansson all have in common? They are all channelling their inner nerd and pulling off the latest in eyewear fashion trends - 'geek chic'.

'Geek chic', pronounced 'geek sheek', is a style movement that refers to embracing stereotypically unpopular and geeky traits such as glasses.

'Geek chic' wearers take key pieces of typically nerdy wardrobes and wear them with intention to make a statement.

Chris Clark, EYEPRO General Manager, says the look is casual yet contrived.

While the phrase has only been coined recently, the trend itself is not entirely new. Elton John, James Dean, Buddy Holly and Diane Keaton were, or have been, pulling off the look for years.

Recent converts to the trend include singer Madonna and her daughter Lourdes who have both been spotted touting large pairs of black-rimmed eyewear.

Prescribed or not, fashion commentators have praised Madonna's latest fashion accessory and called geek glasses the fashion must have of 2010.

"Think cautious eyewear and retro shapes, especially classic round and semi-round frames with unexpected splashes of colour," Chris says.
