Police have identified the man who died as the result of a fall on Friday evening, from Chinamans Bluff, a popular rock climbing area North of Glenorchy in the South Island, as Matthew Byron ALLISON, aged 26 years, of Wanaka.

Mr ALLISON was a British National who had been in New Zealand since February this year and was an experienced climber who had previously traversed the Bluff.

Mr ALLISON's family in the United Kingdom were advised of his death, by their local Police service, yesterday evening New Zealand time, which had been organised through the British High Commission in Wellington.

His climbing companion, who was rescued unharmed, has been named as Wanaka man; James BRISCALL aged 37 years, also an experienced climber.

It appears that, whilst making their way back down the cliff face after completing their climb, a rope has become entangled and, whilst trying to free it, Mr ALLISON has fallen some 155 metres to his death.

Mr BRISCALL, speaking through Police, stated "I want to express my heartfelt sympathy to Matt's family and friends for their tragic loss. Matt and I had experienced a fantastic climb and Matt had expressed how at home and how privileged he felt, to bear witness to the amazing scenery around us. I would also like to express my appreciation to Queenstown Search and Rescue, the Alpine Cliff Rescue team and the Helicopter pilots involved in the search operation, for their efforts."

Mr BRISCALL has asked that media respect his privacy at this time.

Police investigating the incident have completed their initial investigation and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.
