Fiji Evacuation Centres Close

All the evacuation centres in North and Eastern Divisions are now closed.

The Disaster Management Operations Officer in Fiji, Anthony Blake has confirmed that early assessments indicate 376 homes have been destroyed and 423 have been damaged.

DISMAC also reports that up to 72 classrooms have been either damaged or destroyed.

The current death toll stands at three.

NZ and Australian C-130 Hercules transported emergency supplies and officials to Labasa last week. They have now departed Fiji after the Fiji National Disaster Management Office confirmed that there was no further need for reconnaissance and air lift assistance from NZ and Australia.

45 large tents funded by the New Zealand Government arrived in Nadi last night and the National Disaster Management Office in Fiji has advised that these will be used as temporary class rooms.

200 family-sized Red Cross tents (also funded by the New Zealand Government) leave Auckland today for use by the Fiji Red Cross and will be provided to the most affected boarding schools in the Udu, Namuka, Tawake, Dogotuki and Saqani areas. Remaining tents will be used to replenish supplies already used in the response or prepositioned for future events.

The Fiji PM visited the Northern Lau Group of Islands yesterday and three Fiji Navy boats are being re-tasked with the delivery of supplies in the Northern and Eastern Divisions.

Several New Zealand NGOs are running appeals following Cyclone Tomas.
