Wellington, Jan 17 NZPA - A 19-year-old man appeared in Dunedin District Court this morning after allegedly pointing a firearm at a police officer in Alexandra last night.

Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said police were called to an Earnscleugh Road address about 9.40pm, where a man was threatening to harm himself.

An officer found an agitated man, who allegedly pointed a firearm at him and demanded he leave.

"The officer retreated but kept speaking to the man and convinced him to put down the firearm so he could be taken in to custody," Mr Kerrisk said.

A 16-year-old girl at the address was allegedly assaulted before police arrived. She was bruised but did not need medical treatment.

A man appeared in the Dunedin District Court this morning charged with assault, presenting a firearm at police, threatening to kill and threatening grievous bodily harm. He was remanded in custody to reappear on Tuesday.
