Five men in their late teens are missing in bush near Kaiate Falls east of Tauranga. The men became lost after walking in the area during the morning of Friday, 2 March.

A member of the group made contact with Police via cell phone just on night fall to advise of their plight.

The caller was unable to give any indication as to the group's whereabouts.

Police have determined the men have limited bush experience, are lightly clothed and have no food or water with them.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders said, "With the approaching weather front we are very keen to find these people sooner rather than later."

The temperature is expected to drop to about 8 degrees overnight. "The cool temperature, wind and rain mean the group are in for an uncomfortable night," said Senior Sergeant Saunders.

A search and rescue operation has commenced with teams expected to enter the area at first light Saturday morning.
