Wellington, March 12 NZPA - Gales look set to hit parts of the Clutha and Dunedin regions during the weekend and early Monday.
The MetService issued a severe weather watch for the regions tonight.
Forecaster Heath Gullery said a strong southwesterly airstream over southern New Zealand would bring a spell of gales and wind gusts could reach 100kmh, possibly more at times, from about dawn tomorrow until dawn Monday, especially near coastal hills and headlands.
"There is the potential for damage to trees, powerlines and insecure roofs and driving conditions could be hazardous for high sided vehicles and motorcyclists," he said.
"People are advised to keep up to date with weather forecasts, and forecasters will maintain a watch in case a wind warning is necessary."
