A strong west to southwest flow covering much of New Zealand should gradually ease during Thursday. Gales are likely in many places from this evening through to Thursday afternoon and this Watch is for the possibility these gales may become severe in the following areas...

COASTAL PARTS OF SOUTHLAND AND OTAGO, ESPECIALLY BETWEEN BLUFF AND THE OTAGO PENINSULA:

Southwest gales may become severe for a time from this evening through to early Thursday morning.

BANKS PENINSULA:

Southwest gales may become severe for a time from shortly after midnight Wednesday through to around midday Thursday.

NELSON, ESPECIALLY WEST OF MOTUEKA:

Southwest gales may become severe for a time in exposed places from this evening through to early Thursday morning.

WAIRARAPA AND HAWKES BAY BETWEEN MASTERTON AND NAPIER:

Westerly gales may become severe for a time in exposed places from this evening through to early Thursday morning.

BAY OF PLENTY AND COROMANDEL PENINSULA BETWEEN TAURANGA AND WHANGAMATA:

Westerly gales are expected soon after midnight Wednesday through to mid-morning Thursday, and may become severe for a time in exposed places.

People in these areas are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts in case this Watch is upgraded to a Warning.
