Wellington, Oct 28 NZPA - A Wellington garden centre has been fined for keeping their doors open on Good Friday this year.

California Home and Garden in Miramar were fined the maximum penalty of $1000 and court costs of $130 at the Wellington District Court today.

Judge John Walker said the company had been prosecuted for the same offence every year since 2002, except for 2004.

The garden centre had earlier pleaded guilty via a letter.

"It seems this company is prepared to pay the fine each year in order to remain open on the day," Judge Walker said.
