A more consistent approach to rural fire safety is now in force, following the announcement of the newly formed Auckland enlarged Rural Fire District.

The new enlarged district is an amalgamation of all Auckland’s existing rural fire jurisdictions (Auckland, Waitakere and Woodhill/ Riverhead) and will bring together Auckland Council, the Department of Conservation, and forest owners throughout the region.

Principal Rural Fire Officer, Bryan Cartelle says the new Auckland enlarged Rural Fire District will allow key stakeholders to plan for the long-term.

"This new enlarged district will ensure a more consistent approach to Rural Fire management including public education and safety, fire suppression and administration."

"This is a great move for all of the groups involved and will enable us to provide Aucklanders throughout the region with better information, assistance and advice when it comes to fires in the rural area."

Those in rural Auckland who use fire as a land management tool can contact Auckland Council on (09) 301 0101 or, for permit enquiries or general questions, visit the Auckland Council website: www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/EN/licencesregulations/ruralfire
