Gull today announced a 5c per litre discount for all grades of petrol and diesel, commencing 7am Thursday 24 September and ending midday 25 September.

"Gull is committed to delivering extra value at the pumps to Kiwi motorists, and with the school break starting tomorrow this discount will assist motorists to drive that extra mile." says Graham Stirk, Retail Business Manager of Gull New Zealand. Motorists can also make use of their Foodtown, Countdown and Woolworth's fuel dockets to further increase their savings at the pump.

Stirk added that on 1 October 2009 the excise tax on petrol will increase by three cents per litre exclusive of GST, bringing the total excise tax on petrol to over 45.5 cents per litre, exclusive of GST.

"Three cents per litre excluding GST is a large increase in fuel costs," notes Stirk. "It is likely that the tax increase will be incurred by the motorist, so this is an ideal opportunity to fill up at the lower fuel prices and save before 1 October."

Total taxes (all exclusive of GST) on petrol as at 24 September 2009:

* 42.524 c/litre - National Land Transport Fund

* 9.90 c/litre - ACC Motor Vehicle Account

* 0.66 c/litre - Local Authorities Fuel Tax

* 0.045 c/litre - Petroleum or Engine Fuels Monitoring Levy
