Auckland, Jan 23 NZPA - The teenager courier driver accidentally shot dead by police during a motorway chase a year ago will have his headstone unveiled in Auckland today.
Halatau Naitoko, 17, died when police tried to shoot Stephen Hohepa McDonald, who they had been chasing through the streets of west Auckland and onto the north western motorway.
A headstone will be unveiled at Halatau Naitoko's grave at Mangere cemetery today followed by a traditional Tongan feast for more than 200 guests at the family's Mangere home, The Weekend Herald reported.
Mr Naitoko's mother Ivoni Fuimaono said her tears had not stopped even after a year.
"My heart and mind is still mourning. It's hard but we get through it day by day."
An inquest into the death was opened last year but adjourned until March to allow a legal bid by police to keep their identities secret.
