23 MARCH 2009 - Heritage Christchurch will be doing its part again this year to mark Earth Hour at 8.30 pm on Saturday March the 28th, when all the hotel's non-essential lighting will be switched off.

The hotel is also supporting the musical event in Cathedral Square to draw attention to the Earth Hour initiative. In-house guests and casual diners can enjoy a candle light dinner in the hotel's Maddison's restaurant at the same time. Heritage Hotel Management has taken a strong position on the environmental factor since 2002 when the hotel chain first joined Green Globe. Green Globe is the worldwide benchmarking, certification and improvement system assisting the international travel and tourism industry to attain sustainability. Green Globe provides a certification system that responds directly to the major environmental problems facing the planet, including the greenhouse effect, over-use of freshwater resources and the destruction of biodiversity.

Heritage Christchurch has been the pilot hotel for a Green Globe sustainable conferencing project and recently hosted a USA study tour via Green Globe observing the hotel's environmental practices.
