House First On Shopping List For Strike $800,000 Winners

23 January 2009 - A retired local couple have now claimed their $800,000 Lotto Strike prize and are over the moon with their big win, says NZ Lotteries' Chief Executive Todd McLeay.

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, purchase Lotto tickets every week.

The husband went to Paper Plus Napier last week in order to buy a computer book, and thought he would check his previous week's Lotto tickets and buy some new ones.

When told his old tickets were not winning ones he then joked with the Lotto operator that "he can't even win an argument at home with the wife!". The operator told him that this week might be his lucky week then.

When the winner then read in the local paper on Monday morning that a big prize had been sold at Paper Plus he said his heart "did a miss".

"And sure enough, when I checked my ticket, my very first line matched the winning Strike numbers. I thought, well I won't bloody sleep tonight now!" he said.

The couple are renting their home, so have already been out shopping for a house.

"We have also had the same furniture for many many years, since we were married, so it will be a real treat for us to get some brand new furniture for our new house," he said.

"We will also help out our family, who also can't believe that we have finally won Lotto," he said.

The winning Strike ticket was sold at Paper Plus Napier.
