The Royal Spoonbill.

You all know how much I like an underdog. Taking this into consideration, I really think you should vote for The Royal Spoonbill.

This noble and fabulous bird is one of New Zealand’s native birds (well, from the 1930’s on.) It is up for nomination as Bird Of The Year in this year’s poll by Forest and Bird New Zealand. This bird is seriously the Lady Gaga/David Bowie of the bird world... unfortunately, not many people (32 at the time of writing) have caught on to its rock star status.

Currently there are seasoned, impassioned campaigners out there doing the rounds in all corners of New Zealand who are keen to see their chosen bird crowned Bird of The Year 2012.

There are YouTube clips campaigning for the Kākā, the Black Petrel, the Yellowhead and more. The #birdoftheyear hashtag on Twitter is alive and well with pleas for and discussion on votes:

If you haven’t yet been accosted in the street by a Kiwi (not the bird, which incidentally only has 80 votes at the moment), then expect to get a few watercooler comments or encouraging remarks on your Facebook or Twitter feed in the next few days – voting closes on October 10th, 2012.

I was surprised to learn the Forest and Bird New Zealand isn't a government organisation and do not receive government funding. They have, as evidenced by the voting public for Bird Of The Year, many staunch members and supporters - but can always use a few more.

Who’s your pick for New Zealand Bird of the Year? Vote now! ...And er, consider The Royal Spoonbill...it really does need your help.
