Over 1,200 Taupo locals joined Mayor Rick Cooper and the Lakers team down at the AC Baths to watch the finale. "I know I speak for the whole town when I say how proud we are of the team. Their commitment, athletic competitiveness and team spirit shone through and they deserved the win. They truly have 'energy to burn' and represent the essence of Taupo," said Mayor Rick Cooper.

He thanked Lakers Coach Councillor Mike Downard and Manager Suzanne Takiwa for pulling the team together and made special mention of Unison for their sponsorship and support of the team. Others thanked included Taupo Venues, MoreFM, TownCentre Taupo, AV People, Snickers, Starlight Cinema and Burger Fuel who all got behind the community event.

Team Superhero Darrin Gale-O'Donnell - also know as Mr T - thanked the community for their ongoing support and acknowledged the Lakers team spirit and determination which pulled them through the tough competition.

The Mayor wrapped up the night by acknowledging the massive turn out to the community finale. "As Mayor it is fantastic to see so many of you here tonight enjoying this community event and supporting the Taupo Lakers - now let's celebrate being the Top Town in New Zealand and make the most of the bragging rights!"

Top Town billboards have been erected at the entrances to town and flags have been installed throughout the CBD to let everyone know that Taupo is New Zealand's Top Town.

Congratulations to local schools Taupo Intermediate and Taupo Nui-a-Tia who won first place in their categories in the Top Town 'Top Schools' competition, run prior to the show. Well done to everyone who participated and special mention to the junior Mr T's who all walked away with a prize for their dress up efforts.
