Auckland, Oct 14 NZPA - A high profile criminal lawyer representing a woman at the centre of a custody row, who is also facing drugs charges, had a physical confrontation with the media outside Auckland District Court today.

Nicola Richards was alleged to have taken her seven-year-old daughter, Caitlin Thorne, who was holidaying with her grandparents.

Today Richards appeared in court charged with possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. She is not facing charges over the custody row.

When she appeared today, her lawyer Chris Comeskey said he objected to the media cameras in court and the case was adjourned while some issues were finalised. She was due to appear again later today.

As she walked out of the court with Mr Comeskey she was followed by several news cameramen. As Mr Comeskey entered his chambers across the road from the court he shielded Richards and told the cameramen to "f... off".

Richards has been accused by Caitlin's father, Terry Thorne, of snatching the seven-year-old, during the child's school-holiday visit to New Zealand.

Mr Thorne said he had been granted custody of Caitlin after an interim parenting order was granted to him on Thursday.
