The Government's latest announcement of an extra $1bn spending on roading infrastructure over the next three years is timely for Leighton Contractors, a key player in the recently opened $350m Northern Gateway Toll Road and soon to be constructed Newmarket Viaduct Replacement. Leighton has recently relocated to the North Shore from the ANZ Centre in the Auckland CBD where they have helped deliver some of the most complex and demanding road building projects to date, including the Central Motorway Junction and the Northern Gateway Toll Road. "Our move to new premises reflects our commitment to the New Zealand marketplace and to helping the Government meet its infrastructure investment aims," says Robert Jones, Leighton Contractors New Zealand Manager. Mr Jones, who was Project Director for three years on the Northern Gateway Alliance and has over 30 years experience in the construction industry managing major engineering projects in Asia and the Pacific, believes the Government's programme will test the capacity of the industry to deliver the projects. The projects aim to address issues relating to the provision of broadband, power generation, and power distribution and include the upgrading and electrification of Auckland's rail network. "Industry needs to step up to the challenge. We will continue to work with our partners to provide the knowledge and resources to deal with the technical and commercial risks around the Government's programme." The company's success is underpinned by its international best practice solutions and extensive resource pool. "The great thing about working at Leighton is the breadth of experience we can call on within the group and the support we receive from colleagues in our mining and telecom business."
