Last week I was just thinking to myself that we hadn't heard about Bishop Brian Tamaki and the Destiny Church for a while. Then the silence was broken by both TV3 and the New Zealand Herald who revealed that up to 700 male church members had sworn a 'covenant' to remain faithful and loyal to Bishop Brian and him alone.
Obviously, this is an alarming development and despite protestations to the contrary from Tamaki and his newly sworn Destiny apologists like Richard Lewis, his church (if it can be called that) is becoming a cult. For all those mainly working class and poor Maori and Pacific Island men who took the oath at the church's national conference last weekend, they are now about to become the victims of the world's newest cult religion. And I say victims in that they have been completely brainwashed (as have almost all other church members) into believing that Tamaki is their 'king' and that he should be obeyed, without question.
Indeed, many Maori and Pacific Islanders come from cultures where hierarchical, chieftian-based, authority is the norm. Therefore, what Tamaki is doing is that he is cynically manipulating this almost in-built cultural bias towards authority for his own ends and no one else's. Besides this, Tamaki has successfully tapped into the latent social conservatism of this group and built up his own church empire on their backs.
Effectively with this move, Tamaki is now taking the same route trodden by the likes of Jim Jones, Neville Cooper, David Koresh, Kim Young-Moon and others throughout recent history in making his church/sect into an effective personality cult where no member can question the leader's view that he is the ultimate interpreter of God's word. Religion is not alone in the creation of personality cults, of course, as politics is full of examples of strong individuals who have utilised various ideologies (capitalism, socialism and fascism) to underpin their authoritarian rule of whole nations. Recent history is littered with examples of this from that of Stalin in the Soviet Union, Hitler and Mussolini in Germany and Italy, and the dynastic Kim father/son duo in North Korea.
The scarey thing about religious cults is that they thrive in free, democratic societies such as our own. Freedom of religion is something that we should cherish (as is the freedom to hold no spiritual belief at all) but cults seek to abuse this freedom by using psychological techniques to persuade their members that the church leadership is correct in its interpretation of Scripture and that the rest of the world is heathenist and awaiting conversion. This insider/outsider psychology has been successfully utilised over and over again by these and other religious sects (namely Jehovah's Witnesses, the Exclusive Brethren, the Moonies, etc) to effectively 'trap' their members into their belief system, thereby circumventing the democratic impulse to question and debate.
What is sad is that the central cult figure in religious cults (as is the case with political personality cults) lives a life of privileged luxury, all paid for by the sweat and brow of his or her subservient members/workers/citizens. In fact, the payment of 'tithes' and the presentation of 'gifts' to the leader (as prescribed by Bishop Tamaki's new convenant) only serve to reinforce this virtual master/slave relationship. And what most cult members will be dissuaded to think about is the reality that their leader is actually manipulating them purely for his own selfish ends, rather than in the service of some greater religious or political end.
I would like to make the point that what cult leaders do is to subvert both the purposes of genuine religion and ideology. In terms of Christian-based cults, the New Zealand-based Cultwatch group (comprised of people from mainstream religious groups and those without any religious affiliation) has already severely criticised Tamaki and called his actions effectively un-Christian. The group's director Mark Vrankovich stated this week that Jesus really detested two groups of people, the first of these being the temple-based money changers and the second the Pharisees-like figures who came between God and human kind. As ever, I can only imagine that if Jesus were here today He would have something to say to Bishop Tamaki.
For all these reasons, might we one day see a movie on our screens entitled 'The Life Of Brian - And His Cult?'
I'm betting that we might do so - unless his congregation are persuaded by non-church family and friends to see Tamaki and his Destiny Church for what it really is - nothing but a cult!

Well he's not troughing off
Well he's not troughing off the taxpayer is he.
Nor is he getting handouts due to his ethnicity.
He provides something to his followers that they
perceive is of enough value for them to part with
their money willingly. He promotes mostly good
decent values to his subjects and I do not hear
of any of them turning up in court for committing
crime.
Lay off the guy, he probably does a lot more good
than harm in this world.
I am an atheist and detest religion but have better
things to do than pick on law-abiding citizens and so
do you.
In order to be classified as
In order to be classified as cult, certain criteria must be met. One of them is force. The Jehovah's Witnesses use force in many different ways to in order to keep their people "believing". If your Christian organization uses force, then you aren't in a Christian church.
Other tactics they use...forced obedience, fear, and threats of all sorts if members should try to leave.
Believe it or not, they actually keep a file on every member which includes all your reported activities by other members aka, snitches. If you start "slacking" or showing shines of causing "trouble", they call in the elders and hound that person till he complies. They force family members to cut that person off till he complies. They have a name for it..it's called "shunning".
Watchtower society,it's a perfect example of a true cult.

I have not read alot about
I have not read alot about what is happening at destiny but I really do think that originally Brian set out with right heart and motive in setting up this church. I am not totally sure he is wrong at present in what he is doing. I still think he thinks he has the peoples best interests at heart. These people in his church a people like you and me and so they have the ability to discern cult or not right or wrong good or bad. I am a church goer and I certainly would be able to make my choice if I thought I needed to get out. Just because the unchurched people don't understand the church and its ways doesn't make it a cult or a bad thing sometimes as a Christian it is better and more supportive to have your fellow believers one with you in your mission and that is what I think these people are doing. Granted based on the little I know it does look a little over the top in where the church is headed and maybe the power has gone to Brians head and this is the problem. I think Brians original faith and commitment to God was a real commitment and I think the best thing any christian people who care can do is pray. God will deal with it sooner or latter if it is not bringing Glory to Him and Brian will answer to God for his wrong decisions if God sees the need.
It seems the not
It seems the not inconsiderable cash flow isn't quite reaching the multitude.Like most churches in fact. However,if Brian's folks are happy to see Brian, as the way the truth,& the light.Plus pay him & shower him with gifts & bonuses, they must know what their doing. It's the flock's money. So it's up to them how or who they spend/lavish it on,is'nt it?
Brian is a new age PROFIT.

Ah, the comments reek of
Ah, the comments reek of Brian's sworn slaves, (hold him up in the highest esteem, cover his mistakes!!!). Brian Tamaki is what he is - nothing more than an opportunist cult leader; preying on good trusting folks. Amassing his fortunes from the fruit and labour of others. No god fearing christian should ever coax their followers into signing convenants for worship of themselves or their personal family as Tamaki has done in this case. This church?? reeks of becoming a Jonestown scenario. I only hope that the people tied up in this cult realise what it is before it is too late and get out.
Its a waste! Brain Tamaki
Its a waste!
Brain Tamaki once was one of new Zealand's best Christian communicators.
He was was once interviewed by Kim Hill (Kill Him as she has been called) and managed to reverse the interview so that he asked Kim why she did not want to have a greater involvement of Jesus in her life.
Since then he has made his false prophecy that Destiny would have political power by 2008.
This cultic pledge has compounded his error.
What a waste!
Simply put, it says in the
Simply put, it says in the Bible "Do not worship false gods".
It also states in the Bible that Jesus feed over 5000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish, at no point does it say that no-one could eat until Jesus ate, all it states is that he prayed and gave thanks to God.
Unfortunately I believe that Brian Tamaki has got it wrong as the pharasees did, but this is just my opinion.
