Thursday 15 October 2009 - Actress Lucy Lawless will be in Wellington today, talking to Wellington College students about climate change, and playing "head medic" at a climate emergency tent in Manners Mall.

Lawless is one of a range of high-profile New Zealanders who're ambassadors for Greenpeace's Sign On campaign (www.signon.org.nz), which is aimed at encouraging Prime Minister John Key to go to the UN climate talks in Copenhagen in December and commit to a 40% by 2020 emission reduction target.

Over 130,000 people have joined the campaign.

"If the future belongs to our children, it's only fair that they get a vote in what that should look like," said Lucy Lawless. "And it's important they're informed about a problem that will only keep getting bigger unless Governments around the world take action."

She'll be at the school from 9:30 - 11:30am.

Thomas Mitchell, a founding member of Wellington College's Envirogroup said: "We believe that the best way to raise awareness amongst the students is encourage them to think globally, whilst acting locally. With these assemblies and related events we're hoping to provoke thought and inspire change."

From 12-1:30, Lawless will help run a climate emergency tent in Manners Mall. Visitors will be fitted with blue arm casts, reminiscent of the cast that Prime Minister John Key wore when he broke his arm earlier this year. (1)

"Climate Change is a true emergency," said Lawless. "It's the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced. We need all hands on deck."
