Wellington, Sept 17 NZPA - Christchurch Hospital could be in line for a multimillion-dollar redevelopment.
The Canterbury District Health Board last night took a first look at initial concept drawings of an upgrade of the central city site.
Once the board has developed a detailed business case, Health Minister Tony Ryall is expected make a final decision on the project by September next year.
The first stage is likely to take three years once the detailed design is signed off, which could take up to 18 months.
"Canterbury had one of the oldest populations in New Zealand, which was already placing extra pressure on Christchurch Hospital and other DHB facilities," said DHB chief executive David Meates.
"Many of the buildings... are ageing, not fit for purpose and do not meet current earthquake standards.
"Unless we redevelop the Christchurch site or find another alternative we are facing a real sustainability issue with many of our core health services."
