Man Arrested After Car Hits Pedestrian Appears In Court

Auckland, Dec 31 NZPA - A man has appeared in court on drink driving charges after a pedestrian was seriously injured when hit by a car in west Auckland this morning.

Christopher Taylor, 43, was arrested this morning after a 38-year-old woman was taken to hospital following the incident about 4.30am on Rathgar Rd, Henderson.

Detective Sergeant Peter Litherland said Taylor appeared in Waitakere District Court charged with driving with excess breath alcohol and driving with excess breath alcohol causing injury.

He was remanded on bail and will reappear in court in mid-January. A court spokeswoman said his bail conditions included not being allowed to drive.

Mr Litherland said further charges may be laid.

The woman, who remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition, was trapped under the vehicle after the incident.

Mr Litherland said members of the public lifted the vehicle off her before ambulance staff arrived to treat her.
