Auckland, Nov 27 NZPA - The family of an elderly Chinese woman was "delighted" today to hear that a man had been charged with her murder, say police.

The 29-year-old arrested man is due to appear in Manukau District Court tomorrow charged with the murder of 80-year-old Yin Ping Yang in her Manurewa, south Auckland, home.

Mrs Yang died in Middlemore Hospital on June 14 -- three days after she was attacked and beaten.

The man had been a suspect since the inquiry began, said Detective Inspector Mark Gutry.

No one else was being sought by police over Mrs Yang's death but Mr Gutry would not say if the man faced other unrelated charges.

"I can't discuss anything about any evidence against this man.

"The team has been working on this since June 11 and are delighted with the result," he said.

Mr Gutry said the police had also been helped by the public.

Mrs Yang gave police a brief description of her attacker before she died.

"We have been and seen the family today. It has been a long haul for them but having someone now who is going to be made responsible for the death of a close family member ... as I said they are just delighted."

During the inquiry the police homicide team arrested two others on charges unrelated to Mrs Yang's death.

A 16-year-old male and an adult were arrested after bank staff at a Manurewa bank called police when they asked to exchange a large amount of Hong Kong currency.
