Wellington, April 9 NZPA - A man who brandished a samurai sword during a series of Boxing Day assaults in Feilding has been jailed.

Feilding man Nicky Mark Douglas, 26, pleaded guilty to charges of assault with a weapon, wilful damage, common assault, driving while disqualified, breach of community work, and breach of release conditions, when he appeared before Judge Gregory Ross in Palmerston North District Court.

One man had been cut on the head with the sword after he tried to stop his letterbox being damaged by Douglas, who was intoxicated, The Manawatu Standard reported.

Judge Ross described Douglas as a "hot-headed aggressive person who lost control" and sentenced him to 23 months' imprisonment.
