Wellington, April 9 NZPA - Two brothers have been jailed after committing burglaries in Kaikoura, Picton and Blenheim.

Stuart Rocquie Nicho Rattray, 20, and Jayde Conrad Apiata-Rattray, 17, appeared in Blenhem District Court this week and were sentenced to 18 and 19 months respectively, the Marlborough Express reported.

Apiata-Rattray's lawyer Rob Harrison said the teen had been influenced by his co-offenders and asked that he be spared a jail term.

"Do we wash our hands of this young man and send him off to advanced training for young criminals, which is our New Zealand prisons?"

Judge Richard Russell said the men should be held accountable but granted Apiata-Rattray leave to apply for home detention.
