Movies, Magazines And Hearty Meals Popular Fly Buys Rewards

Fly Buys helped families beat the recession related blues with movie tickets, hearty meals and a good gardening read last year, according to rewards trends.

While air points and domestic flights remain one of the most popular rewards, movie passes came next with more than 116,000 tickets going to New Zealand households in 2009.

Chief Executive Andy Symons says, "Time-out and family rewards like magazine subscriptions and movie passes have always been a hit. During the recession, more than ever, Fly Buys meant thousands of families could go to the movies by doing their everyday shopping and swiping their card.

"We can see signs of the gloom lifting and peoples moods improving too, because treat rewards are in favour again. Our obsession with the summer weather led to a weather station gadget as a standout last month."

A prolonged resurgence of interest in home gardening and DIY meant NZ Gardener and NZ House and Garden magazines both made the top ten for the second year running.

Slow cookers took two places in the top 20 rewards (8th and 18th). They are regarded as cost effective because they cook at low temperatures for a long time, which tenderises cheaper cuts of meat and are even more popular in the winter months.

Fly Buys for Music song downloads were one of biggest movers up the reward ranks.

The other rewards in the 2009 top ten were spirits, rental car days, a wet and dry dustbuster and Fairydown Blankets.

Loyalty New Zealand operates the Fly Buys programme and has issued more than 733, 000 rewards to New Zealand households in 2009.
