Wellington, April 17 NZPA - A MP is pleading for public funding for a an obese woman constituent to have a stomach stapling operation.
Whanganui National MP Chester Borrows has asked Whanganui District Health Board to save the life of caregiver Jasmine Sciasca by funding her operation after her weight ballooned from 174kg to 214 kg last year, The Dominion Post reported.
Doctors have told the 24-year-old woman, she would not live another five years unless she had gastric bypass surgery.
Mr Borrows said she would have qualified for the $28,000 operation if she was living within the Capital and Coast health board area.
"Jasmine is essentially being denied medical care on the basis of geography."
The operation shrinks the stomach and dulls the appetite.
Board chairwoman Kate Joblin said a cost-benefit analysis of funding gastric bypass surgery was already being done and Ms Sciascia's case would be taken into consideration.

I would like to know of any
I would like to know of any Government funded obesity surgeries. My interest stems from my own quest for some Government aid or subsidy for my own operation. In the end I had to sell my house and pay for the entire life saving surgery from my own pocket. I am now losing weight (around 40kgs so far) but now live in a rental unit with little or no chance of ever buying another property. I was told that the Government would not provide any help and this was after months and months of writing to MP's and District Health Boards. If there is funding for some I would like to know why I wasn't deemed worth saving? So much for a Free Public Health System!

Why didn't you commit to light exercise and moderating your calorie intake. Yes you had a disease, but the body will not grow obese unless you're supplying it with excess calories.
