National Product Recall - Bonsoy Soy Milk With Very High Levels Of Iodine

Food Standards Australia New Zealand has advised people not to consume Bonsoy soy milk. Coffee shops, retail and other outlets should also not use this product.

This follows a cluster of nine adults aged from 29 to 47, and one child, who have recently presented in NSW with thyroid problems. These individuals all reported consuming Bonsoy soy milk. Subsequent testing of samples of Bonsoy soy milk revealed unusually high levels of iodine. This brand of soy milk is enriched with "Kombu" which is a seaweed product.

A consumer-level recall for the Bonsoy soy milk is being voluntarily instigated by the importer today.

The levels of iodine in the Bonsoy soy milk were at a level that is likely to exceed tolerable daily intakes for iodine when as little as 30ml (one eighth of a cup) is consumed per day by an adult.

Iodine is needed for the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones. A healthy daily iodine intake is about 80-150 micrograms with a recommended safe upper limit of 1,100 micrograms per day for adults, and from 200 micrograms for 1-3 year olds to 900micrograms for 14 year-olds.

Daily consumption of a cup of Bonsoy soy milk could lead to a daily iodine intake of more than 7,500 micrograms at the levels tested. Chronic consumption of high levels of iodine may affect the thyroid and cause people to feel generally unwell. Anybody consuming Bonsoy soy milk product over a prolonged time who feels generally unwell should consult their doctor.

The body excretes iodine, so when a source of high iodine ceases, levels in the body will decrease over time.

The only soy milk product identified through testing to have high levels of iodine to date is Bonsoy soy milk.

Vitasoy Original Sory milk

Vitasoy Original Sory milk has Kumbu in it aswell, so stay away from that...

Wow! I am 39 and was

Wow! I am 39 and was diagnosed this year with an overactive thyroid, put on medication and told to stay away from too much iodine. I have been using Bonsoy for several years and all our family uses it on cereal in the mornings. I have always the thought the expense was well justified given that cows milk has several of its own hazards!

I have changed to drinking

I have changed to drinking Bonsoy in early 2009. I am only 26 years old and as of August 2009 I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, in only 2007 my thyroid had been working perfectly.

I was diagnosed with

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) three weeks ago and I have been drinking bonsoy and vitasoy original (which also contains kombu) all year and I have a very high level of iodine in me. I actually spent the night in hospital last night because of it... I am a 14 year old vegan so bonsoy was the only milk I drank, but now I have changed to rice milk.

This only refers to soymilk

This only refers to soymilk with a particular use by date, not all of it.

The media are, as usual, making it sound worse by saying don't drink any. That is far from the facts.

check out the spiral foods web site for the information

http://www.spiralfoods.com.au/main_frame.html

I also think further

I also think further investgation and information is needed. It would be a shame to panic and stop drinking Bonsoy unnecessarily. I have been drinking it for a few years now and I'm not aware of any adverse health effects.

Unbelievable!! Culprit or

Unbelievable!!
Culprit or coincidence...It always amazes me how "they" can assume disease, from a minority of cases. I have been drinking bonsoy for years. Kombu is a natural seaweed- mineral rich & totally balanced! Unlike for example our chemically enriched iodine salts.

consumer watchfares..will always find something to "blame" for our imbalances in society, that leads to high stress, demands & mis-information giving people the reason to worry, concern & fear for their health & security. Dont believe everything you read!

Disregard abrennan's

Disregard abrennan's statement.

An immediate family member has been drinking Bonsoy for two years and has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. While it is unclear as to whether Bonsoy is the cause, the company, or an other company that uses Kombu in its products should indeed be distrusted.

Wait until you feel that the evidence makes you feel that Bonsoy is uncontaminated, and disregard statements that are worded in a way that requires you to 'obey first, question second.'

While I have no love for the media, I have even less love for indifferent companies or individuals who comment on the internet sounding like employees of said companies.

Disregard the suggestion to

Disregard the suggestion to check the facts. I don't think so. Disregard hysteria, definitely.

For the record I don't work for Spiral or any other food based industry.

Don't believe me, check the facts. Not what happened to some anonymous persons relative.

Check the facts.

The media have actually

The media have actually downplayed the problem. It has been the same recipe for the past 30 years and is not just the one batch.
OF COURSE on the spiral foods website the problem doesn't sound bad. They are trying to cover their behinds by making everything sound dandy so they dont have people suing them.
30 mls exceeds the daily recommened intake (more than any other food on the shelf has- added iodine or not). in 1L a person drinking bonsoy is consuming toxic levels of iodine. excess Iodine affects the regulation of the thyroid hormones and causes a whole range of problems including "burning in the mouth, throat and stomach and/or abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dirarrhea, weak pulse, and coma".
http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=69#toxicitysymptoms

It can also lead to hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and other thyroid disfunction.
This is a problem that has affected many Bonsoy drinkers including myself. I drunk 500ml + Bonsoy for 4 years after finding out that I was Lactose Intolerant and suffered for years, saw countless specialists and doctors and last year was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I am (or was) an otherwise heathy 22 year old woman, I eat well & keep fit and live a heathy lifestyle, and with no history of Thyroid problems in the family. A person my age and of my health should not have developed a thyroid problem, and the link between the consumption and the disease is obvious.

14 Nobel prize winners all

14 Nobel prize winners all maintain thyroid problems are due to fluoridation.

In the first half of the 20th century, fluoride was prescribed by a number of European doctors to reduce the activity of the thyroid gland for those suffering from hyperthyroidism (over active thyroid) (Stecher 1960; Waldbott 1978).

With water fluoridation, we are forcing people to drink a thyroid-depressing medication which could, in turn, serve to promote higher levels of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) in the population, and all the subsequent problems related to this disorder.

Such problems include depression, fatigue, weight gain, muscle and joint pains, increased cholesterol levels, and heart disease.

It bears noting that according to the Department of Health and Human Services (1991) fluoride exposure in fluoridated communities is estimated to range from 1.6 to 6.6 mg/day, which is a range that actually overlaps the dose (2.3 - 4.5 mg/day) shown to decrease the functioning of the human thyroid (Galletti & Joyet 1958).

This is a remarkable fact, particularly considering the rampant and increasing problem of hypothyroidism in the United States (in 1999, the second most prescribed drug of the year was Synthroid, which is a hormone replacement drug used to treat an underactive thyroid).

In Russia, Bachinskii (1985) found a lowering of thyroid function, among otherwise healthy people, at 2.3 ppm fluoride in water.

I drink alot of Bonsoy,

I drink alot of Bonsoy, sometimes we go through a litre a day. I have been very unwell for the past 4 months and was Diagnosed with a Thyroid Flush - Thyrotoxicosis or Thyrosis. I am still on Heart medication to slow the Heartbeat down as it was going overboard 24 hours a day. My Thyroid counts were off the charts when diagnosed T4's were greater than 75 and T3's were greater than 30, they don't register above these levels. I have been very very sick and was off work for 2 months, then a gradual return. To hear that BonSoy can cause this today, I am dumbfounded and will be contacting Spiral Foods in the future.

Kris this is almost exactly

Kris this is almost exactly what has happened to me, but as I work in the hospitality industy and sell Bonsoy to customers as well, I realise that smaller quanities of any soya milk (even one as 'health' as Bonsoy) is a better part of a balenced diet. So my T4 and T3 counts were 'only' 5 to 6 times the average for a person of my age and weight. Now have been on meds for a few months and spent a lot of money on scans, specialists and tests! I hope that this is just an anomaly and Bonsoy can be sorted out and back to normal in a few months!!??!! maybe...

Spiral Foods is actually

Spiral Foods is actually recalling ALL Bonsoy up to dates of 2011...so it is just not a particular date as suggested above.

This statement is correct.

This statement is correct. What a disaster. I sent Spiral an email telling them to get their act together and tell us what's going on. I expect it's the Kombu as there is nothing else in the product that would contain iodine.

I hope they get their act together quickly, I don't like most other soy milk. What a disappointment.

I would suggest if you have been drinking a lot of it you should check out what the symptoms of iodine overdosage is, or see you doctor. I suspect a blood test would show if you have too much in your system

I have been using Bonsoy for

I have been using Bonsoy for around two years. I have previously had two thyroidectomies and so I am on thyroid replacement. In the last 18 months I have had problems with my thyroxine levels for the first time since my second surgery. I have been feeling quite unwell for several months now and so I am off to the doctor after Christmas. Interestingly, the coffee shop I frequent who uses Bonsoy served it to me yesterday, AFTER the recall was issued. I can't have any confidence in information that Spiral Foods issues at the moment.

I had a sub-total

I had a sub-total thyroidectomy about 29 years ago. I have been 'light' a consumer of soy milk for the past 14 years, often using Vitasoy, but in the past 18 months have been using predominantly Bonsoy. I also use other brands of Soy Milk.

I spent a lot of time & money with doctors & alternative therapists as I was just not well! Earlier this year (2009) my heart was racing and after a stress test, ended up in hospital with suspected heart problems which were discounted after an angiogram.

Thyroid function tests revealed very high T3 & T4 levels and TSH levels 80 times lower than the lowest recommended reference range. More interestingly, the recommended Iodine level was >100 ug/L. Mine was 2784 ug/L. Needless to say, I have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism presenting as Graves Disease for which I am now receiving successful drug treatment.

As there is a family history of thyroid conditions, who knows whether mine was triggered by Soy Milk or whether it would have happened anyway. The only way to find out is to stop using the Soy product and see if the drug treatment needs to be modified.

One has to remain open minded as everybody's body is different.

I Don't trust Spiral and

I Don't trust Spiral and Bonsoy any longer.
Organic food company? How about a little bit more of information?
I did search and Couldn't find anything, so I can assume they are taking time with their PR team to come up with something?!
@abrennan this is not hysteria - it's about consumers feeling concerned about our kids and our health.
Yes, if you call concern hysteria I consider myself being hysteric with lack of information and lack of respect from Spiral foods.
Big no no for Bonsoy and anything related to Spiral from now on.
Michelle

I agree. DO NOT trust

I agree. DO NOT trust Bonsoy. This is not hysteria, I developed a thyroid problem only after switching to Bonsoy. I was terribly sick on a daily basis and had to quit my job because my heath was so bad. I had all the symptoms of excess iodine intake "burning in the mouth, throat and stomach and/or abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dirarrhea, weak pulse".

http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=69#toxicitysymptoms

And I was hospitalized on occasion. I have no history of thyroid disfunction and I am a healthy young woman. Iodine can affect unborn babies by passing through the placenta. I know of a few pregnant women who drunk bonsoy. When Something that SO many people consumed poses such a risk to consumers, young, old, children & unborn babies, the problem needs to be considered and examined. AND there definetly needs to be more information released. this is peoples heath at risk.

I am the media spokesman for

I am the media spokesman for Spiral Foods, the importer of Bonsoy. We have had a Media Announcement on the web site since Christmas Eve.Spiral Foods is committed to the highest standards of product quality which is why we have initiated this voluntary recall. We are cooperating fully and closely with Health Authorities after being notified of this issue, which we take seriously. Retailers have been notified to remove all Bonsoy products. Consumers should not use this product until further notice. Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice. Please take your Bonsoy to the place of purchase for a full refund. We are hoping to have Bonsoy back on the shelves as soon as possible. We apologise to our loyal customers and ask for your patience. Please visit www.spiralfoods.com.au/main_frame.html for the link to the media release.

thanks anthony for your

thanks anthony for your commitment!
I personally am not concerned, and have been using the product for about 10years!
I am sad that we have now targetted a great product that many soy drinkers have become aware of and grown to love!

I LOVE THE SPIRAL PRODUCTS! and know that they are quality products, with quality ingredients! Unlike alot of the other crap on the shelves filled with unnecessary sugar, additves & preservatives!
A word of encouragement!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK....and help bonsoy stay alive!!!

MSG - I am sure this is crap

MSG - I am sure this is crap to have in Soy Milk. Bonsoy use seaweed that has high levels of this. Try an Australian Made Soy Milk like Australia's Own Organic or So Natural Extra Milky Soy - there is no Seaweed or MSG in those.

Thanks for this comment.

Thanks for this comment. Like others, I also am keen to continue using your Soy Milk asap.

Please don't stop making

Please don't stop making Bonsoy! We love your product; it is the best soy milk on the market and we would be devastated if you stopped producing it. Regarding the iodine levels, all six of the people in our family have been drinking Bonsoy every day for 12 years and when our iodine levels were tested a year ago we were actually iodine deficient! I wonder if the people with the high iodine levels had some preexisting underlying condition.

I wish everyone affected by

I wish everyone affected by drinking Bonsoy milk a speedy resolution to their health issue. I have been drinking Bonsoy for some time and am not aware of any problem. Spiral foods have a great range of products and I will continue to enjoy their organic range. I look forward to Bonsoy returning to the shelves.

I've always used bonsoy as

I've always used bonsoy as I've always regarded it as the best on the market even though I'd prefer to buy an Australian-made product. I have been feeling a bit lethargic and vague over the past couple of months but whether that's due to consuming bonsoy is not clear at this stage- I'm planning to get a blood test asap. What confuses me is that the Japanese consume large amounts of seaweed often exceeding a daily intake of 50,000mcg and yet are the healthiest and longest living race in the world with one of the lowest incidences of cancer. It seems that iodine "deficiency" is by far a more serious health concern.Maybe they should send all this recalled bonsoy to those countries where iodine deficiency is a major health problem and give them half a glass a day!

my brother has been taking

my brother has been taking medication for thyroid problems for the past several months and has been consuming this brand of soy milk daily for some time.

ckayel, please remember this

ckayel, please remember this is not a problem with soy, it is a problem with Kombu - a seaweed added to the milk. Not all soy milk has this, in fact most don’t. Soy milk is far healthier than other alternatives (e.g Dairy). I would recommend trying Aldi's brand soy milk - to me it tastes exactly like Bonsoy and is also organic - with NO added seaweed and much cheaper than Bonsoy too. We drink it by the slab at our place.

Thanks. I also use the

Thanks. I also use the Woolworths own brand organic soy. It does not appear to have any Kombu and is very nice.

If you think Aldi's soymilk

If you think Aldi's soymilk tastes like Bonsoy obviously you have no taste buds left. Aldi soymilk might be cheap but tastes shit. Nothing beats bonsoy for taste and i hope they can sort this problem out fast and get it back on the shelves. I think Spiral should start making bonsoy in Australia using organic australian soybeans as they have done in the past.

I only drunk soy because I

I only drunk soy because I am lactose intolerant. However the common consensus that soy milk is healthier for you is a myth. unlike cows milk, soy milk is usually full of hidded additives and hormones, and GM beans. The only soy products that should be consumed is fermented soy.

"While fermented forms of soy like miso, tempeh, and natto can be healthy choices for some people, non-fermented soy products can cause a variety of health problems if consumed in large quantities on a regular basis."

IT CAN affect both women and men as:

"concerns rests with the chemical makeup of soy: in addition to all the nutrients and protein, soy contains a natural chemical that mimics estrogen, the female hormone. Some studies in animals show that this chemical can alter sexual development. And in fact, 2 glasses of soy milk/day, over the course of one month, contain enough of the chemical to change the timing of a woman’s menstrual cycle."

soy milk is not good for you. just google "soy milk bad for health" and you will find a range of articles.

I just woud like to know, if

I just woud like to know, if any of the persons that posted comments and fell ill with thyrid poblems, also consume a lot of fish in their diet or take fish oil etc.

I am just trying to figure out if diet and eating habit may have contributed to high iodine levels

rob

I eat oily fish regularly, once a week and take fish oil capsules. In fact when diagnosed, the doctor increased my intake of fish oil. He also put me on Magnesium and a whole host of other things including CoQ10.

cykayel comments below were

cykayel comments below were exactly what my brother went through, put the whole family through hell . this company should pay for all the pain and suffering it has put us through. How on earth did this product get approval to be sold in the first place.

"I spent a lot of time & money with doctors & alternative therapists as I was just not well! Earlier this year (2009) my heart was racing and after a stress test, ended up in hospital with suspected heart problems which were discounted after an angiogram"

Spiral Foods is only the

Spiral Foods is only the importer so you wont get any info you need about what they are going to do about all the lives and families their faulty product has impacted with their faulty product. The manufacturer of the Bonsoy Soy Milk product is Muso of Japan.

http://www.muso-intl.co.jp/english/index.html

A healthy daily iodine

A healthy daily iodine intake is about 80-150 micrograms for adults.

Testing found drinking just one-eighth of a cup of Bonsoy, which is imported from Japan and contains seaweed, would exceed the daily safety limit of 1,100 micrograms, FSA spokeswoman Lydia Buchtmann said.

“These are extremely high levels,” she told AAP

Spiral Foods should have

Spiral Foods should have done some basic testing of the Product before importing it.

The iodine in Bonsoy derives from Kombu, a common variety of edible seaweed, much used in Japanese cuisine. The level of iodine in any given batch of Kombu will vary, depending mainly on the iodine content of the seawater where the Kombu grew and, to some extent, the way in which the seaweed was processed and handled after harvest.

So far this year, three separate food alert notifications have been issued by European Union countries due to excessive iodine in seaweed or sea algae from Japan – in January, in April, and in August

Hi Rob and everybody else. I

Hi Rob and everybody else.
I do not consume much fish at all in my diet and my diet is quite healthy with take away foods very minimal and I drink BonSoy due to being asthmatic and dairy triggers asthma.
My health issues which have been diagnosed as extremely high levels of thyroid hormone in the body, being a mystery cause to specialists.
Everybody that is concerned with their health should ask their local doctor to ask for a Thyroid function test and include thyroid hormone count in the test. The Thyroid function test will show their levels of T4's and T3's which are the hormones that control your bodies metabolism.
If you've got the symptoms of a racing heart rate, weight loss, lack of energy, etc. ask for this blood test to be done and normally results come back within 2 days.
There is no medication to treat an overactive thyroid when it's cause by a mass release of hormones and your thyroid tests to be functioning correctly, the only treatment that works is taking beta blockers to eliminate the effects from stimulating your heart and reduce your heart rate back to normal levels.

Also, in an above message "mal maru" regarding Spiral Foods only being the importer and trying to shift everyones attention over to Japan, don't think so....
In Australia, the responsibility lies with the importer of a product, hence if they've imported and distributed a product that has caused health problems, I believe legal action would then be taken against the importer. I will be looking into this further for sure, anybody that would like to add to this, please do so.

Thanks
Kind Regards
Kris

Further to earlier comments

Further to earlier comments and Rob's questions:
I do consume fish at least once a week. I also take Fish Oil capsules. My endocrinologist did say that was not enough to cause the unusually high iodine levels.
My hyperthyroidism was diagnosed as Graves Disease. I initially took Beta Blockers to slow the heart and I am now being treated with Neo-Mercazole which I have now been taking for 6 months. I got positive results very early in the piece and after some adjustments to the dosage, things have balanced out well. If the treatment is going to work, it takes 18 months - not 17, not 20, just 18 months according to the endocrinolgist. I have met one other person who went thru the same as me and she is now well, without any symptoms and is not taking anything for her thyroid - ie, living a normal life.
I know others who could not tolerate the drug treatment. If this doesn't work then the options are radioactive iodine or surgery, and then taking thyroxin for the rest of your life. I know several people who do this, most with positive results but not all !
There is a lot of information around regarding diet, exercise, relaxation and consumption of goitrogenic foods. And, the advice varies depending on whether you are hypo or hyperthyroid.

Not only would I be

Not only would I be concerned about iodine in fish, but mercury also. Apparently A study that set out to determine how many of the fish in our nation’s streams are contaminated with mercury came back with an ominous answer: quite possibly, all of them. Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey sampled 34 species of fish at 291 stream sites across the country, and found mercury in every single fish they found.

A quarter of the fish had mercury levels that are considered unsafe for people who eat fish regularly, according to the Interior Department.

Mercury can impair a person’s memory, ability to learn, and behaviour; it can also damage the heart and immune system. Even in small quantities, this heavy metal can cause birth defects in fetuses exposed in the womb and in breast-fed newborns whose mothers’ milk is laced with it.

Would be much safer to have flax seed oil rather than fish / fish oil any day.

Well I've read all the above

Well I've read all the above posts and have some major concerns. There is clearly a common thread and I've now shared this link with my uncle who has major Thyroid problems right now.
Tammy - you seem particularly (overly?) supportive. By chance are you linked with Spiral in some way?
For me, Mal Maru's three posts starting 28/12 00:06 hit home hte most.
WHat is Spiral doing about it?
Maybe we should start a petition to get them to agree to total disclosure!

Hey Darren; No Im not assoc.

Hey Darren;
No Im not assoc. with spiral but have been buying their products for 10years + as I have been working in the field of Natural Therapies for 15years. Studied Nutrition, amongst other fields of Alternative Medicine. I am just aware that our health is not soley dependant upon what we put into our bodies...should we ever become too concerned about anyone particluar product then we are becoming very limited in our search for return of health/ maintenance of health.
I love these products...and will endevour to use them incl bonsoy. if you think I am overly supportive that is a fair comment, but I hope that we can begin to search a little deeper than a soy drink!

I agree with Darren. Total

I agree with Darren. Total transparency and full disclosure is absolutely necessary. As I've said before I have no problem with Spiral Products, however, if there is a health risk with a product it needs to be made perfectly clear and recalled immediately. Three organic shops I frequent still have Bonsoy on the shelves. I'd be interested in a comment, regarding this, from the Spiral representative.

I would also like a comment

I would also like a comment from Spiral re whether this problem is isolated to one batch or whether it is a long standing (but presumably only recently detected) problem. If it is long standing then it would make it much clearer in my mind that the thyroid problems I am experiencing (and which have given enough health concerns to cause me to knock back a wonderful career opportunity) are likely to be due to drinking Bonsoy...

A member of my family has

A member of my family has been drinking this product for some time but it was 3-4 months ago when he became seriously ill from thyroid problems. Considering we all eat the same food and drink except Bonsoy it would have to be the product which caused it.

Response to Anthony,

Response to Anthony, spokesperson for Spiral:

The media release issued by Spiral is notable only for what it does NOT say! It doesn't give any indication of the health effects of excessive iodine, and in particular doesn't mention the thyroid. It just makes iodine sound like a pretty benign "naturally occurring substance." What a smooth bit of PR spin! It's really appalling in its lack of information and minimisation of the problem.

My daughter was a regular Bonsoy drinker, and was diagnosed with Grave's Disease 6 months ago. Not only that, she has a 9 month old son, whom she is still breastfeeding. She visited her doctor today, after hearing about the recall purely by chance. Her doctor had not heard anything about it. The doctor telephoned a couple of the major hospitals here in Melbourne to seek advice, and no-one she spoke to had heard of it either.

Incidentally, my daughter also visited a coffee shop while she was out today, and they were still serving Bonsoy!!

What an unconscionable situation! What an ineffective recall! Shame on Spiral!!!!! More interested in covering their corporate a**s than helping people who may have suffered physical injury due to their product.

Thanks Lynda and the others.

Thanks Lynda and the others. Let's keep this going.

So anyway, I did it - I set up this petition calling for total disclosure.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/bonsoy-milk-spiral-products---call-for-full-disclosure

Please sign it and get others to then we'll see what Spiral will choose to share.

Thanks for your effort of

Thanks for your effort of creating the petition Darren. I have signed and hopefully many others will too. I'd also like to say this isn't a personal witch-hunt against Spiral Foods but the onus of addressing this issue in a responsible manner lies with them.

Does anyone know how long it

Does anyone know how long it takes to excrete sufficient iodine to get back to a healthy level? For several years I have had 1 - 2 cups of Bonsoy per day and have had an inflamed colon and general lethargy. I stopped the Bonsoy on the 24/12/09 and am wondering IF the Bonsoy caused the problems how long will it be before I am better?

Thanks for this. I too, am amazed at how little information is out there.

Apparently iodine has a

Apparently iodine has a half-life of 30 days. See:
