Auckland, March 17 NZPA - A new credit card pay system will be installed at all four Auckland City Council carparks after fraudsters skimmed details thousands of credit card holders last year.
Westpac Bank alerted the council after noticing irregular transactions at the carparks.
The system was immediately disabled and many credit card holders were given new credit cards with new numbers.
The bank and police are still investigating the scam but police said today they had still to find the source of the hacking and could not say how much money was taken or exactly how it was done.
The council said an independent report on the four carparks it controlled in the city found the credit card payment machines were old and although they were "fit for the purpose", there were better systems available.
A state of the art system was now being bought and would be installed at all four.
