Ford's new green machine overtakes hybrids as the most fuel efficient vehicle in New Zealand. The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic runs on half the fuel of the average family car. A single tank of fuel can take you more than 1000kms and costs just around $40 at current prices.

Its fuel economy rate of 3.7 litres/100kms will deliver a fuel cost of $958.30* annually compared to a mid-sized family car which would cost $2,408.70 (rate of 9.3litres/100km).

The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic will be available in New Zealand mid year and while it provides exceptional fuel efficiency and impressively low CO2 emissions levels, it doesn't compromise on looks or driving experience.

"The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic is a complete package with exceptional performance, good looks and the best fuel efficiency in New Zealand; 3.7litres per 100km is a new low," said Trevor Auger, Managing Director of Ford New Zealand.

"We know that there are many New Zealanders who consciously make purchase and lifestyle decisions based on their impact on the environment but often these come at a premium price making the decision more difficult. Not with the Fiesta ECOnetic - this will be an accessible, affordable car that provides great value and even better driving performance."

The Fiesta ECOnetic is based on the internationally award-winning Ford Fiesta with a few minor tweaks. Still included are the must haves - five star safety, style, bold colours, Bluetooth, Voice Control and iPod integration. However, the vehicle has had a full 'green' makeover.

The car cleverly tells you the optimal point to change gear to maximise fuel economy. It has also been put on a weight loss plan with the introduction of a tyre mobility kit. Aerodynamics have been improved by a lowered ride height, air deflectors and unique wheel covers.

The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic is reaping recognition and praise around the world being named TopGear's "Green Car of the Year 2009" in both the UK and NZ, Carsguide "Green Car of the Year 2009" and winning the Global Green Challenge 2009: Production Class Small Car Diesel.

"The Fiesta ECOnetic will challenge the way people think about Green cars and also the way people think about Ford. The ECOnetic represents dedication to cleaner, greener technology that is affordable, desirable and available very soon," says Mr Auger.

* Calculation based on an average distance of 14,000km and a fuel cost of $1.85 per litre.

Great effort Ford. It is a

Great effort Ford. It is a great pity that the Governments road user charges are so high. $40 per 1000 km for fuel and about $43 per 1000 per 1000 km for road user charges. It is hard to believe that the Government is serious about encouraging people to reduce carbon emissions.
