New Zealand Aids Foundation Boosts Availability Of HIV Testing

16 June 2009 - The New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF) has increased the availability of HIV testing and counselling services following the court appearance of a man who is alleged to have knowingly transmitted HIV to six people.

Wayne Otter, Regional Manager of the NZAF Burnett Centre in Auckland said "the NZAF provides free, painless, fast and confidential HIV and syphilis testing. We encourage anyone who may be concerned about any sexual encounter they have had to come in and get tested. If you've been at risk, its better to know. To book an appointment call 09 309 5560 or email contact.burnett@nzaf.org.nz."

HIV is an extremely dangerous but easily preventable virus, which can only be spread through bodily fluids such as semen or blood. HIV is not airborne and can not be transmitted through skin to skin contact or kissing. HIV transmission can be easily prevented by using condoms and lube. The case before the courts is extremely rare. NZAF research has shown that the majority of people living with HIV are very responsible when it comes to protecting themselves and their partners by using condoms and lube.
