Wellington, Nov 1 NZPA - Nia Glassie, was picked up and thrown against a wall because she was "ugly and didn't listen", the three-year-old's mother was overheard saying.

At the High Court at Rotorua yesterday, crown witness Robyn Armstrong, an intensive care unit ward clerk at Starship children's hospital in Auckland, said she overheard Lisa Kuka, Nia's mother, telling a phone caller from Australia she had seen Nia being thrown against a wall.

The Dominion Post reported that Mrs Armstrong had taken a call from Australia for Kuka at the hospital, two days after Nia was admitted in a coma.

Someone was yelling at the other end of the phone, Mrs Armstrong said.

"Lisa said (to the caller) `hang on a minute, it wasn't me'. She then said: `I saw it happen...I saw it...I was there. He put her head between his legs and hit her head on the floor three times and then threw her...against the wall because she was ugly and didn't listen'."

The caller and person who allegedly harmed Nia were not identified by name in court.

Mrs Armstrong said she had made notes on what she heard and gave them to police.

Kuka, 34, is charged with manslaughter by failing to provide medical treatment.

Brothers, Michael and Wiremu Curtis, are charged with Nia's murder, wilfully ill-treating and assaulting a child, and assault.

Nia's cousin Michael Pearson, 19, is charged with manslaughter, wilfully ill-treating and assaulting a child, and Michael Curtis' girlfriend Oriwa Kemp, 17, is charged with manslaughter and assaulting a child.

Nia died from massive bleeding between her skull and brain at Starship Hospital 12 days after being allegedly kicked in the head by the Curtis brothers on July 20 last year.

The trial continues next week.
