North Shore Residents To Be Congratulated For Reusing, Recycling, Donating And Disposing

This year's inorganic collection by the North Shore City Council has been the most successful to date, thanks to the efforts of North Shore residents.

Approximately 2600 tonnes of waste was collected this year compared to 3800 tonnes last year, which means that 30 percent less inorganic waste will be sent to landfill.

The reduced tonnage may stem from residents reusing and recycling materials they would have previously thrown away, donating reusable items to charities or finding alternative disposal options.

Waste Minimisation Manager Warwick Jaine said the Council is happy with the outcome of this year's collection and attributes this to residents following the instructions in their inorganic leaflets and placing their rubbish out on the correct days.

"We've received positive feedback from residents on the efficiency of this year's collection but the real thanks goes to North Shore residents for their cooperation during this year's collection.

"Householders placed their rubbish out for collection on the correct days which meant that our contractors could collect in each area quickly and with minimum fuss.

"This year's inorganic collection did however see some unsuitable items such as tyres, paint and hazardous material placed out on the kerbside.

"Items such as tyres, paint and hazardous materials need to be treated and disposed of appropriately. If householders have unwanted paint and paint tins, they can return them for a small cost to Resene Colorshops or PlaceMakers stores.

"Tyres can be disposed of at most tyre stores, where there is usually a take-back scheme, and all hazardous household materials should be taken to the HazMobile for proper treatment. "We thank the public for their support during this year's collection and we welcome any feedback residents may have in order to continue to provide improvements to next year's service," says Warwick Jaine.
