Northland Project Another Step Forward

2 APRIL 2009 - The recently announced Northland AMA project is further recognition of the benefits aquaculture can potentially provide to the economy and the regions hosting the sector.

"The Northland region is one where its true potential as a prime aquaculture area has not been fully realised in the past," said Mike Burrell, Aquaculture New Zealand CEO. "However, it is this potential that has identified the Northland region worthy of further enquiry and investment by the Government as a future location for aquaculture development."

With the constant and increasing international demand for marine protein the region is in an ideal position to benefit economically through its geography that provides a magnificent environment for aquaculture. This is further enhanced by the increased focus the region has placed on its water quality.

"While benefitting the economy as the nation's next major primary industry, aquaculture is a proven regional economic catalyst. Directly and indirectly, because of its long-term nature, the sector is able to provide a level of certainty to the industries supporting aquaculture.

"The aquaculture sector recognises the support of the Northland Regional Council and the Government in the delivery of this project. The sector has always been convinced of the potential in the region and welcomes the project's focus and look forward to its outcome", concluded Mr Burrell.
